How to avoid sunburn on cactus?

Sunburned Mammillaria

That cacti are plants that need to be located in a bright area that is something that who else knows the least, the problem is when we buy a specimen that has been taking care of itself protected from the star king and we expose it directly to it. The next day the poor thing will be full of burns. How can they be avoided?

If we want our succulent cacti plants to remain as beautiful as the first day, then I will explain how you can avoid sunburn on cactus.

Do not expose them to the sun if they are not used to it

This is the first and foremost thing to keep in mind. The cacti that arrive at the nurseries are plants that, in general, have been cultivated in greenhouses or in areas protected from the sun's rays; In addition, they have certainly also been living in an area where the temperature was pleasant every day of the year, which can be a problem.

When we buy them and take them to the patio or garden, it is not surprising that they have a bit of a bad time; that is to say, that burns appear or that it costs them a lot to resume their growth. Thus, it will always be better to put them in semi-shade and start adapting them to the middle in autumn or late winter.

Never over water them during the day

I myself admit that I love to take the watering can and give the plants a bath, but that only has to be done when the sun is low. Why? Because otherwise what will happen is that the magnifying glass effect will occur; that is, the sun's rays when they come into contact with the water adhering to the body of the cacti will burn them.

So, you know, if you have to water during the day, only moisten the soil, never the plants. They will thank you, especially if they are in flower as the flowers tend to wither prematurely if they are wet.

If they are indoors, do not put them right in front of the window in summer

In summer, the sun is so strong that it often causes burns almost without realizing it. But of course, if we keep in mind that cacti need light, where do we put them? Precisely right in front of the window, which is a mistake because also this way the magnifying glass effect can be produced.

Therefore, it is highly advisable to place them on one side of the window and rotate the pot daily so that all parts of the cactus receive the same amount of light.

Follow this calendar so they get used to the direct sun

Ferocactus latispinus

Now that we know what not to do, Let's see what steps we must follow so that little by little they get used to it. Remember that you have to follow them either in autumn or, if frosts usually occur, at the end of winter:

  • First week: we put them in the sun during the first hour of the morning.
  • Second week: we put them in the first two hours in the morning.
  • Third week: we put them on the first three hours in the morning.
  • And so, always increasing the exposure time by 1h.

In the event that we see that brown spots appear, we will slow down.

Thus, little by little we will achieve our goal: avoid sunburn on cacti. 😉

If you have doubts, do not leave them in the inkwell. Question.

Hi there! I would like some advice on the desert rose and pachypodium lamerei. I have specimens of both but have not yet found the right location for these plants ... better in full sun? Half shadow? Interior next to a window? Thanks!

      Hi Silvana.
In the sun both. But if they come from the greenhouse, put them outside, where the light gives them noon (in the morning or in the afternoon).
      A greeting.
