Our protagonist is a crass or non-cactus succulent plant whose scientific name is Sedum sieboldii. It is popularly known as Japanese silk or Pilarica, and it is a species native to Japan. It develops creeping or hanging stems depending on where we have it, which reach a length of up to half a meter. From them sprout rounded blue-gray leaves with serrated margins.

Blooms in fall. Its flowers are grouped in inflorescences called corymbs, and are terminal; that is, after flowering the stem dies. These flowers are star-shaped and pale pink in color.

What are the care it requires?

The silk of Japan is a crass that, as we said before, will give you many joys. It is not a demanding plant at all, since it also withstands drought and high temperatures well. But so that there are no problems, or if there are, to know how to act, it is important that you take into account several things that we are going to tell you below:

Location

It needs sun, which is why it should be placed in a bright area, if possible outdoors. But yes, you need to get used to it little by little and gradually, since otherwise its leaves would be burned.

Another option is to have it inside the house, as long as there is a room in which there are windows through which a lot of light comes in from outside.

Earth

  • Flower pot: Ideally, it should be filled with mineral substrate, such as the cheekbone for example. Now, if you can't get it, mix universal substrate with perlite in equal parts.
The container to be used must have holes in its base through which the water comes out.
  • Garden: grows in all types of soils, but they must have good drainage since it does not resist waterlogging.

Irrigation

Irrigation will be rather scarce. To prevent the roots from rotting, the soil or substrate must be allowed to dry completely before re-moistening. For this reason, it is not a good idea to plant it in a pot without holes or to put a plate under it.

The frequency will vary depending on the climate and the season of the year, but in general it is recommended to water about 2 times a week during the summer, and every 10-15 days the rest of the year. In winter it will be watered less, about once a month.

Subscriber

From the beginning of spring and until the end of summer it is advisable to pay at Sedum sieboldii with a fertilizer for cacti and succulents following the indications specified on the package. You will see that there are several: liquids, powder, granules, and bars. Let's know when to choose each one:

  • Liquid: it is the most recommended for potted plants due to its rapid effectiveness. The indicated dose is diluted in water, and then watered. You can buy it here.
  • Powder: especially suitable for plants that are in the ground. Its effectiveness can also be fast, but due to its characteristics, it could worsen the drainage of the soil, which is why it is not recommended for plants that are in pots.
  • Granules: by decomposing more or less quickly, they can be used interchangeably in plants that are in pots or in the garden. Of course, it is necessary to know that the risk of overdose is high, so it is not necessary to increase the indicated dose under any circumstances, since if it is done, the roots would burn.
  • Bars: these are stuck in the substrate or earth, and they decompose as they are watered. They are interesting for their quick effectiveness and ease of use, both for potted plants and in soil.

Multiplication

Multiply by stem cuttings in spring or summer. To do this, it will be enough to cut a piece, let it dry for a week in semi-shade and then plant it in a pot with a pumice or universal substrate mixed with perlite in equal parts.

In a matter of a few days, usually 5-7, it will start to emit its own roots. Keep it in that pot until you see the roots come out of the drainage holes, or until it has taken up all of it.

Plagues and diseases

It is quite resistant, but during the rainy season it must be protected from the snails and slugs. These animals tend to devour leaves and stems.

Rusticity

Resists cold and frost up to -2ºC.
