When to buy cacti and other succulents?

Cactus in a nursery

When you live in an area where the four seasons are well differentiated, it is sometimes very difficult to avoid resisting buying cacti at any time of the year. But if these circumstances arise, we will have no choice but to do so. And is that If we visited a nursery in the middle of winter, the plants would have more problems than in spring to acclimatize.

Then, When to buy cacti? If we want to enjoy our succulents from the first day they arrive home, it is very important to choose the right time to go buy them.

Cacti, as well as the rest of succulents, should only be bought during the warm months, but the reality is that they are acquired throughout the year. And of course, having low prices, who is able to resist them? I, at least, have a lot of difficulty doing it. But as I said at the beginning, it is necessary to wait for the good weather to return, why? For all these reasons:

  • Succulents (cacti, succulents, caudiciforms) are plants native to tropical climates, that is, they they are not used to the cold (with some exceptions such as Lanata wife or the Oreocereus trolli).
  • They are plants that they have been pampered. In nurseries, they are usually inside, not outdoors. If we take them outside, the most likely thing is that they will catch cold right away and get quite ugly because they are not used to it.
  • They could be attacked by fungi. These microorganisms are opportunistic, infecting succulents at the slightest sign of weakness, such as the one they can show if they are not protected from low temperatures.

Cactus in a greenhouse

So, unless we have a greenhouse or live in an area with a mild climate, it is best not to visit cactus nurseries until spring returns. Trust me, it's for the best 😉.

Hello, I am from Mexico and just a couple of weeks ago I was thinking of getting a good amount of succulents until I remembered that it is almost winter and that they would probably suffer at home since we have had temperatures even 6 ° C
I was not very sure but I decided not to risk it and now that I see your post, I confirm what I suspected. Thanks for the chair
